Irvin Cobb Bridge- Connection bridge over the Ohio River between Brookport, IL and Paducah, Ky on Highway 45. It was dedicated in 1929. A crossing charge of $1.25 was collected from either cards or horse drawn carriages. The charge was long ago removed. Offers an expansive view of the Ohio River Lock & Dam 52, Brookport- One of the 52 locks and dams on the Ohio River. Construction began in 1942. A dam at Olmsted, IL will replace both dam 52 and 53 at Olmsted. Nice picnic area with scenic view of the Ohio River. Approx. 4 miles from I-24 exit 37 towards Brookport. Fort Massac State Park- Oldest state park in Illinois. On the Ohio River in Metropolis IL, it's history dates from 1757. Ordered restored by George Washington when he became President of the United States. A large bronze statue of George Rogers Clark overlooks the river. Clark arrived in 1778 and left his boats for overland journey to Kaskaskia on his westward trek. Fort Massac offers fantastic views of the Ohio River, with many picnic areas and pavilions, camping facilities, trout pond, museum with video theater. Open daily, free admission. I-24 exit 37 to Metropolis. (618) 524-4712 Harrah's Metropolis Casino- Metropolis' only casino, offering dockside gaming, come and go as you please. Casino open daily from 9:00am through 7:00am. Three restaurants offer a wide variety of dining. (618) 524-2628 Superman Statue- A 15 foot bronze likeness of the "Man of Steel" draws visitors from all over the world. Unveiled in 1993 at the cost of $157,000. The base is the shape of Superman emblem covered with bricks engraved with names of local residents, former residents and a few famous people. Located on the north side of the Massac County Courthouse overlooking the business district. What a great photo opportunity for you or the family with the champion of "Truth, Justice, & The American Way". Superman Museum- The largest collection of Superman memorabilia under one roof. Many items from early Superman days, movies, costumes, set props, and much, much more can be found in the museum. Souvenir and gift shop located at the entrance to museum. Admission to the museum is $3.00 for adults with children free (with paid adult). Open daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm (618) 524-5518 Curtis House Museum- Two story brick home constructed in 1870 by Civil War veteran Major Elijah P. Curtis at 405 Market Street. Located one block south of the Massac County Courthouse and the Superman Statue. It is the home of the Massac County Historical Society. Furnished of the period with local artifacts. Call (618) 524-3497 for hours or tour appointment. Donations accepted. Mermet Lake Conservation Area- Located 12 miles west of Metropolis, the lake comprises 460 acres and is the focal point of the area. Anglers can try their skills on a variety of fish species, including largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish. The area is bounding with wildlife both game and non-game species. Wildlife enthusiasts have access upon a roadway that bisects the area, allowing frequent viewing of many wildlife species. Sportsman have available approx. 2100 plus acres for all types of hunting, including dove, quail, deer, squirrel, rabbit, and turkey. Hunters are required to check in with the site before hunting. The area is popular for bird watching with many threatened and endangered species. The area is open to the public 24 hours a day. During waterfowl (duck) season the area is closed except to hunters. (618) 524-5577 Kincaid Mounds- Earliest discovered culture in Massac County from Indian Knoll culture to Mississippian period. Located on scenic byway between Brookport and Golconda, IL in both Pope and Massac counties. Portion in Massac county is owned by state of Illinois. There has been no public development as yet. Excavated artifacts will be housed at the Fort Massac Museum in Metropolis, IL C.B. and Q. Railroad Bridge- It spans the Ohio River at Metropolis. This famous simple truss bridge connects Metropolis, IL to the Paducah, Ky area. The bridge opened in 1917 after many lives were lost during construction. Located at the foot of Ferry Street in Metropolis next to Harrah's Metropolis Casino. Engineers on trains crossing the bridge boasted doing 120 mph on this run. Many trains still cross this bridge daily. Fort Massac State Park Trout Pond- Located on Highway 45 in Metropolis. Open October 16, 204 with trout season. Must have proper license and stamp.
